Spring 2009
Spring 2009 - Opening Day
Doz Boyz and the Spartans kicked off the Spring 2009 season. It was Doz Boyz who scored the CCFFL's 21st season's first touchdown when Jacob Nordman caught a 44 yard touchdown pass from quarterback Jeff Day. Day rushed in the extra point to start things off with a quick 7 point lead. The Spartans were unable to put it all together, although receiver Mike Fuller was able to rack up 5 catches for 88 yards. But Fuller's receptions never made it in to the endzone, and the Spartans opened up the season with a disappointing shut out loss. Nordman was nominated for player of the week both offensively and defensively as he had 3 receptions for 114 yards and 2 TDS offensively, and on defense 2 tackles and a pick. In addition to 2 TDS thrown to Nordman, Jeff Day completed a third touchdown pass to tight end Carl McCalister, and rushed in a touchdown as well. Runningback Mikel Williams returned to Doz Boyz this season and made his presence known by racking up 124 rushing yards. Doz Boyz opened up there season with a 26-0 win.
The Feds and the Violators took the field for game 2, and it was the Feds who would score first despite starting out the game with a turnover. Feds quarterback Shawn Hudson would attempt his first pass of the season just 5 weeks post shoulder surgery only to learn that the arm wasn't quite ready. Violator Marco Urbina gained possession for his team when he picked off Hudson, but the Feds would get the ball back quickly when cornerback Matt Davidson picked off Violators' new starting quarterback, Ryan Bauman. After the disastrous start for both teams, Hudson would turn to his left arm and backup quarterback Paul Harting, and between the two of them they drove down field to set up a 1 yard rushing touchdown by Harting. The Feds completed a 1 point conversion attempt. The Violators answered the Feds first score with one of there own when Alex Martinez rushed in a score, but after an unsuccessful conversion attempt, The Feds held a 7-6 lead. Feds DE, Rory Sullivan earned Defensive Player of the Week with 4 tackles, a sack, and a deflection. Sullivan helped the Feds hold the Violators to only 6 points in the game. Javier Vega was nominated for offensive player of the week for his 4 receptions for 98 yards and a TD. Emil Lovec scored the Feds final touchdown. Harting was 5 of 6 passes for 137 yards and 2 TD's and led the Feds to a 19-6 opening day victory.
The Beaver Warriors and Killer Instinct closed out Spring 2009's opening day. The Beaver Warriors started out the season with an impressive 38-12 victory. Quarterback Travis Wood earned offensive player of the week completing 19 passes for 302 yards and 6 touchdowns. Wood completed 8 passes to what appeared to be his brother, Tanner Wood. Tanner scored 3 touchdowns in the game and was also considered for offensive player of the week with 148 yards. Receiver's Rudy Reyna, Michael Martin, and Jacob Jones all scored 1 touchdown each on big passes from Wood. Travis Wood did not only lead his team offensively, but was instrumental on defense as well with 3 tackles and an interception. Beaver Warrior Rudy Reyna led the defense with 2 tackles, 2 deflections and a pick. Killer Instinct quarterback Anthony Cupp got his team on the board when he completed a 39 yard touchdown pass to Matt Watty. Killer Instinct also scored a touchdown when Derrick Carpenter ran a kick return in for 6. But the 2 touchdowns scored by Killer Instinct wasn't enough as The Beaver Warriors had a great opening day and scored 6 touchdowns and 1 two point conversion. The Beaver Warriors start the season off at the top of the seeding with the win.
Week 2 Highlights
Doz Boyz started off week 2 against the Beaver Warriors and both teams were following an opening day win. It was Doz Boyz runningback Mikel Williams, Mikel Williams, Mikel Williams, who opened up the game with 3 touchdowns giving Doz Boyz an 18 point lead early on. Williams scored first on a 42 yard run, followed by a 23 yard pass from QB Jeff Day, and then again on another 42 yard run. It looked like Williams would be a shoe in for offensive player of the week after his performance, ending the game with 8 carries for 131 yards and 2 TDS rushing, and 2 receptions for 31 yards and a TD, but Mikel's numbers surprisingly were edged out later in the day in another game. The Beaver Warriors finally put some points on the scoreboard when QB Travis Wood hit Michael Martin on a 60 yard bomb resulting in 6. Doz Boyz quarterback, Jeff Day, answered the 6 and brought his team's score up to 26 with a 64 yard touchdown to Jacob Nordman. Day earned defensive player of the week for his performance at Safety turning the ball over twice with 2 interceptions. Day went on to lead his team down field for a final touchdown to Nick Medina which ended the game 32-6 in favor of Doz Boyz.
The Feds and Killer Instinct met up for game 2 of week 2 and the Feds were hoping to win for the second week in a row, while Killer Instinct hoped they would see there first win in the CCFFL coming in after a disappointing opening day loss. The Feds offense racked up the yards, and went on to shut out Killer Instinct with a 28-0 win. Feds receiver Javier Vega won offensive player of the week with 8 catches for 200 yards and 2 TDS. In addition to Vega's 8 catches, receiver Emil Lovec caught 5 balls for 145 yards and a TD. Feds quarterback Shawn Hudson threw 25 passes and completed 19 of them for 422 yards. The Feds scored there 4th touchdown when Jason Plaut recovered a bad Killer Instinct snap and rushed in for a score. In addition to Plaut's turnover, there were 3 more turnovers in the game as Feds' cornerback Stephen Novello picked off Killer Instinct QB Anthony Cupp once, and safety Emil Lovec was a runner up for defensive player of the week with 2 interceptions. Despite big numbers by the Feds, Killer Instinct linebacker Derrick Carpenter was all over the field and ended the game having grabbed 6 tackles and 5 sacks.
The Violators and the Spartans ended the day with both teams hoping to see there first win of the season after disappointing opening day losses. The Violators put the first points on the board when QB Ryan Bauman hit Kiko Vega on a 42 yard pass which set up a rushing touchdown from runningback Alex Martinez. Martinez went on to push the Violators up to a 12 point lead with another rushing touchdown that was also preceded by a Bauman/Vega big connection. The Spartans were down by twelve when Spartan QB, Gerald Fryman, hit receiver Mike Fuller for a 23 yard TD. But the Violators quickly struck back when Bauman found receiver Austin Matthews open on a 26 yard score. The Spartans entered the half time break with an 18-6 deficit to overcome. After the break, Spartan QB, Fryman, found tight end Mo Otuafi open for a 49 yard touchdown to bring his team back in reach. With just 6 points now separating the two teams, the Violators made there first score in the second half as Bauman hit Vega again on a 49 yard touchdown and took the score back up to 24-12. Vega finished the game with 4 catches for 141 yards and a TD, and was a nominee for offensive player of the week. But the Spartans weren't done yet as Fryman rushed in a TD and now his team was only down by 6. The Violators took possession but Spartan Sam Larogue ended the Violators drive with an interception that gave his team the chance to tie with just minutes left in the game. The Spartans marched down the field well and got within 20 yards to the zone, but the Violators defense stopped them from getting in, and the Violators won the week 2 battle 24-18.
Week 3 Highlights
Week 3 kicked off with the 2 and 0 Doz Boyz meeting the 0 and 2 Killer Instinct. The records going in predicted the outcome as Doz Boyz stayed yet to be defeated and Killer Instinct remained winless after the 45-0 shutout posted by Doz Boyz. Doz Boyz runningback Mikel Williams wasn't just nominated for player of the week, this time he won offensive player of the week with an incredible 11 rushing attempts for 165 yards and 3 touchdowns. Williams owed much of his success to great blocking by his offensive line consisting of Marques Fuller, Steve Serefini, and Eddie Ebersole. The 3 longtime CCFFL veteran lineman rarely get the credit they deserve, but they have assisted Williams now after only 3 weeks of play with racking up 424 rushing yards. Doz Boyz QB Jeff Day threw another big game to receiver Jacob Nordman. Day and Nordman connected on 3 passes for 125 yards and a TD. Defensively, Day and Nordman each picked off Killer Instinct quarterback Anthony Cupp once, and cornerback B.J. Williams also had an interception in the game. Damien Williams sacked Cupp in the endzone for a safety as well. The 4 turnovers kept Killer Instinct's offense off the field for much of the game, and they were unable to move the ball successfully throughout the game. Day completed a touchdown to tight end Carl McCalister, and also handed the ball off to Antoine Cooley for a score to reach the 45-0 win.
The Spartans and the Feds were game 2's match up and while the Feds came in at 2 and 0, the Spartans were looking to post there first win; and they did. The Spartans defense lit up the Feds offense, easily stopping everything the Feds tried. Spartan defensive end Lalo Otuafi earned defensive player of the week honors with 4 sacks, 1 tackle and a game opening interception. Spartan corners Brian Fludd and Sam Larouge also each caused a turnover in the game with interceptions. Spartan Quarterback Gerald Fryman hit receiver Mike Fuller for the games first score. Fryman went on to rush in a second TD, and then hit Fuller again for a third giving his team an 18-0 lead. Feds receiver Javier Vega gave his team hope when he returned a kick for a TD which was followed up by a successful 2 point conversion. The Feds were feeling better after Vega's score as they were down only 18-8 just before the half, but Mo Otuafi and Fryman deflated that hope quickly as with seconds before the half they connected for a 26 yard score, and Fryman went on to complete a 3 point conversion which brought his team into the half time break with a 27-8 lead. After the break, the Spartans only scored once when Fryman rushed in another TD, but it was plenty as the Feds offense was only able to score once as well. Fryman was nominated for offensive player of the week scoring 5 touchdown in the game and leading his team to a 35-14 victory over the Feds.
The Violators and The Beaver Warriors capped off the day with the day's most exciting game. The Beaver Warriors scored the first touchdown when QB Travis Wood hit Dustin Watkins for 6. The Violators, absent starting QB Ryan Bauman, went with Kiko Vega as the back-up. Vega quickly answered the Beaver Warriors' score by rushing in a TD. Vega gave his team a small lead when he successfully converted an extra point. The Beaver Warriors came back and stole the lead when Wood connected with receiver Michael Martin in stride for a 60 yard touchdown reception followed by a 2 point conversion. The Violators came back within a point when Vega hit receiver Mark Lobsinger for a score. The score held tight at 14-13 for much of the game with the Beaver Warriors toting the lead. Violator defensive end Rolando Arechiga was nominated for defensive player of the week alongside of runningback Alez Martinez who was nominated for offensive player of the week. Arechiga had 4 sacks and a tackle in the game, while Martinez rushed 11 times for 113 yards. There was only 1 turnover in the entire game when Beaver Warrior Gary Sawyer picked off Vega. With time ticking away, and the Violators down by a point, Vega and Lobsinger would hook up again for a score and give the team a 21-14 lead. The Beaver Warriors had one more chance to try and recapture the lead and drove down as far as the 20 yard line, but on 4th and goal a pass from Travis Wood to Tanner Wood right in the endzone was dropped, and the Violators took home the 21-14 win.
Week 5 Highlights
The Beaver Warriors and The Spartans kicked off week 5, and although the Beaver Warrirors after 5 weeks of football, sit at just 1 and 4, one thing is for sure, they have given everybody a game, and gone home with now 3 heartbreaking losses. The Spartans dominated the first half of the game opening it up with a quick 12 point lead. Tight end Mo Otuafi scored the first 6 on a 5 yard pass from quarterback Gerald Fryman. Fryman and Otuafi capitalized quickly on a bad punt and scored 6 more on a 21 yard pass. The Spartans took an 18 point lead when Fryman connected with Max LaLoud. LaLoud went 63 yards for the score. The Beaver Warriors first score came from Jacob Jones who took the team into half time down 18-6. After the half, the Spartans QB Fryman found Scott Witter open for 6 more, and followed it up with a 2 point conversion to take a 26-6 lead, but the Beaver Warriors came alive and made it a game when Quarterback Travis Wood hit Michael Martin on a 41 yard pass for 6 and followed it up with a 1 point conversion. Wood brought the Warriors even closer when he it Tannar Wood for a 68 yard score on the next drive, and followed it up with a 1 point conversion to bring the Beaver Warriors within just 1 score. The Spartans bumped there lead up again when Fryman went to receiver Mike Fuller for a 31 yard score, but again the Spartans didn't convert and the Beaver Warriors still had time and were down only 32-20. Travis Wood threw a bomb to receiver Tannar Wood and 60 yards later the Beaver Warriors found themselves down only by 6 again. The Spartans weren't able to answer and the Beaver Warriors got the ball back with time to score. They drove down field to the 20 and on 4th and goal for the second week in a row were unable to capitalize. The Spartans took home the 32-27 victory in a game that came down to the last second.
In another close one, the undefeated Doz Boyz took on the Feds for game 2. The Feds scored quickly on the opening drive when Javier Vega scored on a 44 yard pass from QB, Shawn Hudson. Doz Boyz didn't let the opening drive detour them, as they answered with a score of there own when QB Jeff Day hit tight end Carl McCallister on a 51 yard touchdown bomb and followed it up with a 1 point conversion. The Feds scored again, when again Vega and Hudson hooked up, but again were unable to convert. Jeff Day took Doz Boyz into the halftime break with a 2 point lead as he ran 31 yards for a score and again followed up the TD with a 1 point conversion. The Feds were down 12-14 when Doz Boyz upped the ante as Jeff Day found receiver Jacob Nordman open for a 46 yard score. This time, the Feds were able to stop Doz Boyz from converting. With Doz Boyz leading 20-12, Javier Vega earned himself player of the week honors both offensively and defensively as with little time in the game remaining he picked off Day and ran 98 yards for the score. Down by 2, the Feds went for a 2 point conversion, and Hudson hit receiver Stephen Novello for the 2 point conversion to tie the game. Doz Boyz got the ball back with a little time remaining, but Feds Safety Les Reddick, stopped any chance they had to score when he picked off Day. The game went into overtime with a tough break for Doz Boyz to have to overcome as runningback Mikel Williams was sidelined from an earlier ejection, and QB Jeff Day was sidelined with a knee injury. But Doz Boyz got the ball first in OT, and quarterback Marques Fuller was stopped cold by none other than Javier Vega, Vega picked off Fuller's first pass and ran it back 48 yards for the game winning score. The Feds got the 26-20 win in overtime against Doz Boyz.
The Violators and Killer Instinct closed out week 5, and the first half of the season. This one was not a close one like the 2 before as the Violators worked there way up and down the field at will and Killer Instinct was not able to stop anything they did. Violator quarterback, Ryan Bauman, rushed in the first touchdown, and followed that score with a 41 yard TD in the air to receiver Tilor Smith. Smith scored a second touchdown when he picked off Killer Instinct's QB, Wes Kaylor and ran it back 100 yards for 6. Violator cornerback Claudio Martinez also picked off Kaylor and ran it in for a score. Tilor Smith wasn't done after his first TD reception and 100 yard interception runback, he earned a nomination for offensive player of the week when he scored a third time on a 71 yard pass from Bauman. Receiver Austin Matthews, and tight end Austin Leak also scored touchdowns from Bauman passes, and Bauman earned an offensive player of the week nomination as well when he rushed in a second touchdown and lead the Violators to there 48-0 shut out win. Bauman finished the game scoring 5 touchdowns, rushing 8 times for 44 yards and 2 TDS and completing 6 of 9 passes for 184 yards and 3 TDS.
WEEK 6
Important Schedule Change Info!!! Please Read this Update!!!
Important Schedule Change for the end of the season, please check the schedule page for the updates. When we first published the schedule, we believed that the Memorial Day Holiday was at the end of the month. We have been enlightened to the fact that we had that info wrong. So, the bye week is NOT May 30th, it will be May 23rd. In addition, we had to do a week 9 and 10 swap which does not change any games that are scheduled to be played, but does change the time that you may have originally been scheduled for in weeks 9 and 10. Hence, whatever you were scheduled for in week 9 is now week 10, and week 10 is now what was week 9. This was a necessary change to insure all teams will have a game going into the bye week which precedes playoffs, please contact Tracey if you require a further explanation or if this change creates a problem for you as we do not want this change to affect any team negatively. Once again, you will still play the same games you were originally scheduled to play, only the weeks you play them in have been swapped. Please make sure you check the schedule and update your team on these changes.
Sorry for the scaled down news for week 6 and late updates to the sight this week. I was not at all of the games and therefore couldn't report all of the highlights. League Leaders and players of the week updated as of Tuesday, April 21st!!! The Easter Holiday, spring break, and my absence for some of the games Saturday did not allowed me the time to do the updates as quickly as normal.
What I can tell you is that Doz Boyz and the Spartans opened up the second half of the season in an exciting game that came down to the end. Doz Boyz finished with a 20-18 win. Jeff Day put the first 6 on the board for Doz Boyz with a 60 yard touchdown pass to Carl McCallister. Day scored 2 more touchdowns on the ground rushing in a 22 yard score and a 24 yard score. The Violators whooped up on the Feds in there second meeting of the season. Alex Martinez rushed for 68 yards and 1 touchdown in the game for the Violators offense, but it was the Violator defense that really stood out holding the Feds to only 1 score and picking off Feds QB Shawn Hudson 3 times in the game. Jairo Obregon, Tilor Smith, and Marcos Martinez all caused the turnovers, and Martinez ran his back 51 yards for a TD. The Violators won 26-6. The Beaver Warriors got there second win of the season, and it was a big one. After suffering several last minute heartbreaking losses, the Beaver Warrior beat Killer Instinct 46-13 to close out the day. QB Travis Wood threw for big numbers again passing 32 times and completing 25 for 290 yards and 5 touchdowns. Wood connected with Tannar Wood for 4 passes for 80 yards and 2 TDS, and he hit Michael Martin on 6 passes for 107 yards and a touchdown. Travis Wood also rushed in a touchdown and completed 2 TD passes to Jacob Jones.
Important Notice Below, Please read and share with your teammates that might not read the website!!!
Once again we find ourselves in a position where we must put out a reminder that flags need turned in after your game, trash from your team and fans needs taken with you and thrown away when your game is over, and NO ALCOHOL is permitted at the field. Please tell your players and YOUR FANS that we can lose our field if we are caught allowing people to consume alcohol on school property. We understand that this may seem like no big deal to you, but if anyone from the grounds department, or the school security comes out to audit us and we have people drinking out there, we WILL lose our field. Also, we are having to spend too much time cleaning up after people when the games conclude. Please assist us with these things. We will be enforcing these issues with the forfeit and fine rules from here on out as simply asking people to respect these rules has been unsuccessful. Teams that allow drinking from the players or the fans before, during, or after the game while on school property will be given automatic forfeits. Trash that is not picked up, and flags not turned in will result in a 25.00 fine to the team, fines will have to be paid to those that end up cleaning up your trash before a team will be able to play again. Again, we hate to have to enforce things this way, but unfortunately have too. Captains, please help us with this as it is our responsibility to enforce the rules of the grounds that we agreed to when we obtained our permit to use the facility. Please assist us in preserving our field and reputation. Please keep in mind that our field is at a school that children attend. The district does not even want to see alcoholic beverage containers in the trash cans!!! Alcohol is not allowed in any capacity on school grounds.
