SPRING 2003
Opening Day Game Summaries
Scores and The Stallions opened up the season repeating Fall 2002's Championship Game match up. The defending champions' Scores, were victorious again, beating The Stallions 14-8. The game was a defensive struggle throughout. Scores put the first points on the board when Quarterback, Jeff Day, ran 35 yards down field into the endzone and then followed up the TD with a 2 point conversion to Tight End Eric Brown. Brown also caught his teams second touchdown giving Scores a 14-0 lead. Stallions' Cornerback, Larry Harper, brought The Stallions into the game when he returned a recovered fumble for a touchdown. Late in the game, The Stallions were down by 8 and possession was with Scores. It looked grim for The Stallions until Defensive End Quincy French sacked Day for a Safety bringing his team within 6 and giving them possession. But, Scores' defense held tight and stopped The Stallions from scoring, enabling them to take possession and run the clock out. Scores' Linebacker, Eric Brown earned defensive player of the week grabbing 7 tackles and getting an INT. Other Scores' standouts were Defensive End, Seth Hernandez with 4 sacks and Jeff Day who had a great day offensively and posted 2 tackles and 2 deflections on defense. Despite their loss, The Stallions played a great game and their highlights included Running Back, Jason Jones' 10 rushing attempts for 55 yards.
Long time rivals The Confederates and Rip-N-Tear played game two on opening day. Like we have seen so many times when these two teams play eachother, it was a close one that came down to the end. The two teams both struggled to get into the endzone but The Confederates found it first when Runningback, Jason Plaut, ran in a 10 yard TD. The touchdown was followed by a 2 yard conversion pass caught by new Confederate, Tight End, Brian Peterson. Both team's defenses played great bringing the two teams into halftime with an 8-0 score. Rip-N-Tear corners, new player Bart Dover and Gary Noah grabbed several tackles with Noah posting 6 and Dover 4. Dover also deflected two passes. Rip-N-Tear Linebacker James Stiplin had a great game getting an INT, 2 tackles and a deflection. The Rip-N-Tear Defensive Ends kept the pressure on Fed's QB, Shawn Hudson. Jeremy Litka, Randy Firestone and Chris Welton had 6 sacks between them, each getting two. The Confederate defense was equally strong with new Feds, Brian Peterson and Rudy Hill both catching 2 Interceptions. Peterson also accounted for 4 tackles and a sack. Cornerback, George Garton, had 3 tackles and 3 deflections. Rip-N-Tear tied the score late in the fourth quarter as QB, Paul Harting, hooked up with receiver Gary Noah for 6 followed by a succesfull 2 point conversion to Dustin McWilliams. With the score tied at 8-8 the game went into overtime and The Confederates won the coin toss and opted to take the ball. Rip's defense still holding tight put The Feds into a 4th and double sticks situation. A change of possession at that point would have given Rip the ball with only 34 yards to go. Rip-N-Tear Defensive End, Jeremy Litka drove Fed's QB, Shawn Hudson back several yards and had massive pressure on him. Hudson in a desperate attempt to get rid of the ball tossed it to Jason Plaut, Plaut ran 66 yards down field with the help of awesome blocking by Joe Eckman and Jeremy Harrison. Plaut's score won the game for The Confederates and earned him Offensive Player of the week. The Feds won the game 14-8.
Ending the action in Week one was Mean Streak versus The CCFFL's newest addition, The Bombers. Mean Streak initiated The Bombers into the league and they weren't gentle. Streak's offense was on fire as Quarterback, Sage Timms, completed 12 of 19 passes for 253 yards and 4 touchdowns. Tight End Claude Walker scored 2 of Mean Streak's touchdowns, 1 for 24 yards and the other for 51 yards. Timms also threw a touchdown to receiver Charles Brown and one to Runningback, Maurcie Carter. Carter didn't find success on the ground, rushing 4 times for a negative 6 yards, but, he had a great game in the air catching 4 passes for 91 yards. At half time The Bombers were only down 12-0 but the team didn't capitalize offensively in the second half of the game either. Mean Streak's defense was led by Javier Vega. Vega had 3 tackles a deflection and an INT. But it was the 6 Mean Streak deflections and 3 sacks put up by the defense that made it difficult for the Bombers to get things going. Bombers Quarterback, Rowan Emmert, completed 8 of 28 passes for 46 yards. Bombers Runningback, Fernando Castro, rushed 5 times for 24 yards. A promising drive for The Bombers was cut short when Emmert was picked off. The Bombers defense nabbed four interceptions in the game stopping two conversions and causing two change of possessions. But the defenses efforts were for not as the offense was unable to score. Abdul Ghaffary accounted for two of the picks and one each for Ben Egbert and Gio Gerrard. After taking a season off, Mean Streak kicked off their return with a 25-0 shut out over the Bombers.
League Milestones
Congratulations to Jason Plaut & Nate Nelson of the Confederates. In week two, Jason Plaut became The Carson City Flag Football League's All-Time Leading Rusher with 3621 yards. Also in week two, Nate Nelson becomes the 2nd Receiver in league history to surpass 4000 yards receiving.
Week 2 Game Summaries
Like the clouds in the sky, black and gray was on the field for game one of week two. Under poor rainy conditions, Rip-N-Tear seemed to be having their way with Mean Streak in the first half of the ball game. Rip's defense held Mean Streak scoreless while their offense led by Quarterback, Paul Harting, marched down the field leading his team to two first half scores. Harting, hit Receiver, Austin Mathews for his team's first touchdown and then found Tight End, Jeremy Litka open for their second. After the half time break, Harting made his way into the end zone on a 61 yard scamper putting his team up by three scores. But, as the skies cleared, Mean Streak came to life. Quarterback, Sage Tims completed a TD pass to Maurice Carter to put his team on the board. Still down by two scores, The Mean Streak defense got Mean, CB Charles Stacker racked up 5 tackles and caused a turnover in which the ensuing drive led to another Mean Streak touchdown from Tims to Josh Scott. Now down by only one TD, Mean Streak scored again, this time Tims found Tight End Claude Walker open. Walker ran 73 yards for the touchdown that could have tied the game. But Rip-N-Tear holding a three conversion point lead forced Streak to go for three and the attempt was no good. Rip-N-Tear's defense was led by Defensive End Jeremy Litka. Litka posted 5 tackles, 1 sack and 1 fumble recovery. Team mate Bart Dover also had a great game defensively grabbing two tackles and one Interception. Rip-N-Tear receiver, Gary Noah, caught the team's fourth touchdown, but an unsuccessful conversion attempt kept Mean Streak alive with little time left in the game. Mean Streak was unable to capitalize and time expired giving Rip-N-Tear a 27-18 victory.
Game two started out the same as game one, like it's predecessor, at half-time the scoreboard read 14-0. The Confederates were up by two scores. Runningback, Jason Plaut rushed in The Fed's first TD on the games opening drive. The other came from Quarterback Shawn Hudson and Receiver Nate Nelson. Hudson hit Nelson on a 47 yard strike. Nelson was not only instrumental offensively but he earned defensive player of the week for his 7 tackles and 1 deflection. The Stallions had a hard time getting things going and on the kick off of the second half The Feds made it even more frustrating for them as they successfully recovered an onside kick. The Feds scored again and upped their lead 21-0 when Hudson met Nelson again, this time on a 31 yard TD pass followed by a second successful conversion pass caught by Rudy Hill. Hills first conversion point catch was for two. Stallions receiver, Larry Harper put his team on the scoreboard catching a 49 yard bomb from QB, Bill Manzara for a TD. Despite great pressure from Stallions Defensive End Quincy French who had 3 sacks and a deflection in the game, the Feds answered Harpers touchdown with one of their own as Hudson hit wide receiver George Garton for the team's fourth score. Down 26-6, Stallions receiver Will Franklin pushed his team a little closer scoring on an 11 yard pass. But The Feds were unstoppable offensively as Hudson completed 15 of 22 passes for 349 yards and 5 touchdowns. Hudson got all of his receivers in on the action as Receiver Robert Ryan caught his team's fifth touchdown and Tight End Brian Peterson caught a 47 yard post for their 6th TD. Hudson earned offensive player of the week for his performance and led his team to a 40-12 victory.
The Bombers faced the defending champions, Scores, to end week two's action. Scores started with only 8 players but despite the short roster the champs gave the Bombers a run for their money. The game shifted back and forth throughout. Scoring first was The Bombers. QB Rowan Emmert hit Receiver, Gio Gerrard for a 39 yard score. Scores QB Jeff Day answered with a touchdown to tight end Eric Brown. Following the tying TD, Day gave his team a two point lead as he rushed in a two point conversion. The Bombers quickly recaptured the lead and scored again. Emmert who had a great day completing 16 passes for 285 yards found Carlos Mendoza open for the first of three touchdown passes. Mendoza caught 7 passes in the game for 124 yards and 3 touchdowns. The Bombers were now back up by four but keeping with the chain of events, Day scored again on a pass to Wide Receiver Steve Alt and grabbed the lead back. But The Bombers weren't done either, Runningback Fernando Castro rushed in a TD to put his team back on top. Following Castro's score, the Score's team scored again this time Day rushed it in. Both teams scored again and late in the game the score was 26-24 Scores. As time was running out it looked like the two point conversion scored earlier in the game by Scores was going to be the deciding factor. With only seconds left in the game, The Bombers had one last chance to score. Driving all the way down to their endzone it seemed like it was over when Emmert fumbled the third down snap. But The Bombers hung tight, Emmert recovered the fumble, regrouped and threw the game winning touchdown pass to Carlos Mendoza. The Bombers beat Scores 30-26.

Week 5 Game Summaries
Week 5 opened up with Scores Vs. Mean Streak, both teams were looking for a win after 3 consecutive losses. Scores dominated the game and sent Mean Streak home with another loss and a shut out. Scores receiver Jacob Nordman returned to the CCFFL last week when his team faced the Confederates, like last week against The Feds he made his presence known against Mean Streak. Nordman in only two games pushed his way onto the top ten receiver list. He was 5 for 92 yards and two touchdowns against Mean Streak. Scores quarterback Jeff Day found Nordman for the team's first score on a 34 yard touchdown pass. Day scored again in the first half, this time rushing 82 yards to the endzone. Mean Streak had a hard time moving the ball in the first half. The Streak tried a QB change with Maurice Carter filling in for their usual quarterback, Sage Tims. Carter had little success throwing the ball completing only 4 of 13 passes for 12 yards. He saw the most success when he ran, rushing 7 times for 61 yards. Scores defense caused two turnovers in the game with the Day brothers each accounting for one. Chris Day Intercepted a pass and Jeff Day recovered a fumble. Mean Streak's defense also caused a turnover, Chris Henderson picked off Jeff Day and returned it 28 yards. Scores repeated their first half success in the second half of the game scoring one more TD and holding Mean Streak to none. Jacob Nordman scored on a 40 yard TD reception. Mean Streak moved the ball better in the second half with Sage Tims stepping back into the QB role. Tims completed five passes for 84 yards. The final score was 20-0 Scores.
The Stallions and Rip-N-Tear faced off for game two in week 5. It looked like it was going to be a close one as the score was tied 14 all at half time, but Rip-N-Tear owned the second half of the game. Rip-N-Tear quarterback Paul Harting scored the first 6 points on an 8 yard touchdown run. The Stallions quickly answered Harting's scored when Stallions' former QB, Bill Manzara now in the receiver role, caught a 34 yard TD pass from Stallions' new quarterback, Dillon Berner. Most impressive in the game was Rip-N-Tear Wide Receiver and Cornerback Gary Noah. Noah was instrumental in both his roles, offensively he earned player of the week. He caught 6 passes for 175 yards and 2 touchdowns. Defensively he got 5 tackles, 1 deflection and intercepted a ball that he returned 34 yards and then pitched it to Harting for a score. Paul Harting completed 13 of 22 passes for 225 yards and 3 touchdowns. In addition to two TD receptions to Noah, Harting completed a 16 yard touchdown pass to Scott Onstott. Stallions runningback Jason Jones scored the Stallions second touchdown. Jones rushed 10 times for 52 yards in the game. Dillon Berner's QB debut was bittersweet, although his team suffered a bitter loss, Berner found a sweet target in Receiver Larry Harper. Harper caught three passes for 113 yards. Defensively Stallion, Justin Bodine tried keeping the pressure on Harting posting 3 sacks. Larry Harper also put up a great defensive effort with 7 tackles but it wasn't enough to keep Rip out of the zone. Rip-N-Tear's defense was successful holding the Stallions scoreless in the second half. Harting and Noah led the team posting 10 tackles between them and an interception each. Rip-N-Tear beat The Stallions 33-14.
The undefeated Confederates looked to stay that way when they faced the Bombers in the day's final game. The Bombers were hoping for a second win coming into the game after suffering two consecutive heartbreaking close game losses. The Bombers shut the Fed's opening drive down when Nick Medina intercepted a pass by Shawn Hudson down at the Fed's 20 yard line. But the Bombers were unable to capitalize off of their turnover. Feds defensive end, Ed Zinda, put massive pressure on Bomber QB, Rowan Emmert. Zinda posted 7 sacks in the game. Emmert had a hard time moving the ball as Zinda had help keeping the pressure on. Emmert was sacked 12 times, Zinda's 7 plus 3 from Nick Johnson and 1 each by Joe Eckman and Neal Braunel. Bomber defensive end Kevin Suter kept the pressure on Fed's QB, Hudson, Suter had 3 sacks in the game. But Suter's pressure wasn't enough to keep the Feds out of the endzone. Runningback, Jason Plaut, rushed 9 times for 64 yards and scored the team's opening score. Ed Zinda caught the Fed's second score on an 8 yard screen. The Feds had a 12 point lead when Emmert put his team on the board with an eleven yard TD pass to Fernando Castro. Carlos Mendoza scored the conversion point and brought his team into the game with a 12-7 score. Fed's QB, Hudson, scored again, this time on a short 3 yard run. Hudson scored the game's final TD with a 39 yard pass to receiver George Garton. The Bombers' defense stopped The Feds from scoring any conversion points but the 24 touchdown points were all they needed to be victorious. Hudson completed 12 of 23 passes for 201 yards and 2 TDs. The Fed's defense held The Bomber's offense to 130 total yards. The Fed's held onto their undefeated status with a 24 - 7 victory.

Week 7 Game Summaries
Rip-N-Tear faced Mean Streak (well, half of Mean Streak) in week seven's opening game. Mean Streak showed up after getting a much needed victory in week 6 surprisingly undermanned. Six Mean Streak faithfuls, Sage Tims, Jose Iza, Brian Spiker, Frank Martino, Clayton Powers and Mike Lindsay stayed and fought it out against a fully forced Rip-N-Tear despite the 6 on 9 odds. Although the short handed Streak had little chance of seeing a win, the team played hard until the end. Rip-N-Tear's defense forced Mean Streak quarterback Sage Tims to take off running a league record 18 times. Tims rushed for a respectable 129 yards but unfortunately the Streak offense couldn't make it into the endzone. Rip-N-Tear quarterback Paul Harting had his pick of the field completing 10 of 12 passes for 308 yards and 5 touchdowns. Harting hit receiver Gary Noah 3 times for 183 yards and two touchdowns. Rip receivers Austin Mathews and Dustin McWilliams and tight end Justin Harris each scored a receiving touchdown. Defensively, Harting and Noah also led the Rip-N-Tear field with Noah grabbing 8 tackles and Harting posting 5 tackles and 2 interceptions. Mean Streak was unable to cover the field defensively but Tims tried his best to be all over grabbing seven tackles in the game. Despite the advantage Rip-N-Tear had, the team played great football and went home with a 42-0 shut out victory. (Due to the circumstances of the game, Rip-N-Tear Captain, Paul Harting, requested that no player of the week award be given this week to Rip-N-Tear players. However, the league would like to congratulate the players on awesome stats and sportsmanship. Further, the league would like to thank the Mean Streak players who stuck around for the game also showing great sportsmanship and effort in the game.)
Game two brought the Confederates to the field to face The Stallions. The Feds were hopeful that they could hold on another week to their undefeated status but knew they had major obstacles to overcome. The first obstacle being The Stallions who were hoping to roll on a winning streak of their own after their week 6 rejuvenating victory. The Feds however, held on to their title despite league leading running back Jason Plaut's two cracked ribs (suffered in week 6) and with Feds leading receiver George Garton and guard Jeremy Harrison both missing in action not to mention receiver Nate Nelson suffering from fatigue and Quarterback, Shawn Hudson having to throw with a separated right shoulder. Hudson had to spread the ball out amongst his wore down players but thankfully found one healthy stand out in tight end Brian Peterson. Peterson had a career best catching 6 passes for 148 yards and 2 TDs. Peterson also returned an INT 100 yards for a touchdown defensively. Despite their injuries, Hudson and Plaut put up high numbers with Hudson completing 13 passes for 223 yards and 4 TDS and Plaut rushing 79 yards and scoring one TD. Plaut also scored a receiving touchdown. The Stallions defense gave their team three prime scoring opportunities after Dillon Berner, Tim Williams and Larry Harper each picked off Hudson changing possession. But the Stallions offense couldn't capitalize off of the picks. Stallion, Jason Jones, tried to kick start his offense catching two touchdown passes and receiving for 99 yards but mass pressure on Quarterback, Dillon Berner who suffered 6 sacks in the game made it hard for the team to answer the Feds 6 TDs. Feds Rookie Rory Sullivan had a great game defensively grabbing 5 tackles, 1 sack, 1 deflection and an Interception. The Feds beat The Stallions 37-13.
Ending the week was The Bombers desperate for a win facing Scores who also was in need of a victory. Both teams suffering with unimpressive records needed the win to stay healthy in the playoff hunt. The Scores defense shut down The Bombers opening drive forcing them to punt and Scores QB/Safety Jeff Day set the tone returning the punt for a TD. Day proceeded to have a great game both passing and running throwing for 171 yards and 3 touchdowns and rushing for 86 yards. The Bombers had a hard time stopping Scores from moving the ball. Scores defense was successful shutting down the Bombers offense. Steve Alt led Scores defense with 8 tackles matched closely by Eric Brown's 5. Seth Hernandez and Chris Day both caused turnovers with an interception each. Offensively Alt was Day's leading receiver catching 3 passes, two of them for touchdown and a total of 102 yards. Scores scored 26 points in the game on four touchdowns and held The Bombers to only one TD caught by receiver Nick Medina. Medina caught 7 passes for 85 yards. Bomber quarterback Rowan Emmert completed 17 passes for 192 yards and the touchdown to Medina. He also completed passes to Gio Gerrard and Carlos Mendoza who each accumlated 52 yards but the team wasn't able to make it into the zone more then once and Scores made their record more respectable with a 26-6 winning score.
