 Spring 2007 Week 1 & 2 Headlines

3 New Teams Join The CCFFL for The Spring 2007 Season

Spring 2007 kicked off on March 10th and the new season brought 3 new teams to the field.  After 2 weeks of play, the new teams all got to go home feeling both the agony of defeat and the thrill of victory.  The first new team to get a CCFFL victory was Rated X, captained by Vaughn Terry.  Terry led his team to an opening day victory against fellow new team, The Shockers.  Although the Shockers had to endure an opening day loss, they didn't have to wait long to get their first win.  In week 2, The Shockers took on The Thundercats, and they captured their first win and posted a 30-6 final score.  Shockers captain Brian Austin scored 3 receiving touchdowns in the game at the tight end position, and Jarod Logue returned a 93 yard INT for a touchdown in the game for another score.  The Guerillaz had a heart breaking debut going home with a week 1 loss to X Factor after failing to capitalize on a last minute scoring opportunity that would have gave them a win.  But the Guerillaz had a better week 2, and brought their record to 500 with a 23-15 win over Rated X.  Casey Lind and Jason Phillips led the Guerillaz defense with Lind causing 2 turnovers with 2 INTS.   Phillips had  6 tackles, a sack, and he returned a fumble to the zone for a TD.

The CCFFL's Longest Winning Streak Broken

The Feds and The Blue Chips opened up the season with a rematch of the Fall 2006 Championship Game.  The Feds beat the Blue Chips 14-0 and ended the Blue Chips 29 game winning streak. In week 2, the Feds went to 2-0 after beating Scores 25-15.  All 3 Feds receivers, Emil Lovec, Paul Harting, and Javier Vega caught a TD pass from QB Shawn Hudson in the Scores game, and runningback Jason Plaut rushed one in as well.  The Blue Chips started out the season rough with their loss to the Feds, but regrouped in week 2 to beat the Violators 20-14.  Blue Chips Quarterback Bryan Tilton was absent for the week 2 win, but team captain Bryan Buckner stepped in and got the job done. Tight End Logan Lord racked up 105 receiving yards, and receiver Abner Lopez scored 2 TDS to assist in the win.

X Factor's QB down, but backup opens up the season 2 and 0

X Factor returned for the Spring 2007 season with quarterback Lee Robertson sidelined while recovering from a knee injury.  But the team's backup quarterback, Sergio Godoy has pulled off 2 close ones to open the season along side of the Feds at 2 and 0. X Factor faced off in week 1 against The Guerillaz and posted a 13-8 victory. In week 2, Godoy led the team to a 14-12 win over the Demons.

The Demons and The Violators both batting 500

Returning teams the Demons, and the Violators both started off Spring 07 with wins, but week 2 brought them both down to a 500 record with tough close losses.  In week 1, The Demons shut out the Thundercats 26-0 while the Violators won a close one against Scores beating them 19-15.  Week 2 was another close match for the Violators as they faced the Blue Chips and held a lead for most of the game.  But the Blue Chips prevailed in the end beating the Violators by a TD 20-14.  The Demons followed up their shut out victory with a disappointing 2 point loss to X Factor.  Missed conversions cost the Demons the game losing 14-12.

Scores and The Thundercats off to a Rocky Start

Scores opened up the season a rare 0 and 2 after 2 tough losses to the Violators and The Feds.  Scores came to the Spring 2007 season without long time CCFFL all-star Jeff Day.  Day's absence from the roster brings new Head Captain, Eric Brown into the quarterback position.  Brown's debut at QB was impressive as he currently sits at the #4 place on the QB leader board, but big yardage hasn't led to big scores, and the team has had a disappointing first 2 games. Like Scores, the Thundercats will have to wait until week 3 for another shot at a win.  The team struggled in both week 1 and 2 against The Demons and The Shockers.  The Demons shut the Thundercats out in week 1, but in week 2 captain and QB Jeremy Davidson put the teams first points on the board with a touchdown to receiver Steven Novello to avoid another shut out.

Week 4 Headlines

Feds still undefeated after a close one with X Factor

Kiko Vega opened up the Feds Vs. X Factor game with a 73 yard kick return for a Fed's opening drive touchdown.  The Feds then quickly upped their lead to 12 on their second drive when QB Shawn Hudson threw a 45 yard TD to receiver Emil Lovec.  X Factor almost answered the Feds 2 quick scores with a run to runningback Paul Turstage, but Turstage's run for the goal was stopped short by an inadvertent whistle which stopped the team at the 20 and they were unable to capitalize on the remainder of the drive.  The Feds scored again when Hudson hit Javier Vega for a 60 yard score followed by a 2 point conversion giving them a 20-0 lead.  X Factor put themselves back into the game just before the half when QB Lee Robertson hit Turstage in the air with a 19 yard TD pass.  Factor converted and the teams went into half time with a 20-7 score.  After the break X Factor quickly moved closer in when Robertson found Turstage again and brought his team to only a TD away.   X Factor would edge closer to the lead when Matt Daggett scored the team's final touchdown, but a failed conversion attempt left them down by a point.  With the score 20-19 the Feds sealed the deal with a final touchdown pass again to receiver Javier Vega and the Feds after 4 weeks of football remained undefeated with a 26-20 victory over X Factor.

The Violators post the Highest Score so far this season against the Thundercats

The Violators met the Thundercats in week 4, and it was all Violators.  The team racked up the most points in a game so far this season scoring 7 touchdowns.  Violator Marco Martinez scored 3 touchdowns alone with an INT returned for a score and 2 receptions for 56 yards and 2 scores.  Violator Alex Martinez also scored 3 touchdowns catching a 36 yard TD pass from QB Steve Handleton, and rushing in 2.  The 7th Violator touchdown was rushed in by Les Reddick.  Violator QB Handleton threw for 170 yards, 3 touchdowns and no turnovers.  The Thundercats avoided the shut out when Gary Sawyer rushed in a TD for his team.  Violator Marco Martinez led the defense with 3 tackles and 2 INTS, while Luiz Jimenez posted 2 tackles, and 3 sacks.  The Violators ended the game with a 55-6 victory.

The Demons knock the Shockers to 250 and bring themselves up to 500

Both the Demons and Shockers came into week 4 with only 1 win behind them, but it was the Demons who moved up and knocked the Shockers down after week 4's game.  Demon runningback Josh Trinner put the first points on the board with a 44 yard touchdown run.  The Shockers tied the score with a touchdown pass from QB Cory Olsen to receiver Mike Perry.  But the Demons reclaimed the lead on the ensuing kick off with a return for a score.  The Shockers took a pre half time lead when Olsen found Greg Lexa open for a 29 yard touchdown pass, and converted the extra point sending them into half time with a 13-12 lead.  But after the break, the Demons took control of the game scoring 3 unanswered touchdowns.  QB Ned Nemoth threw for 182 yards in the game and found receiver Eddie Wilson for 2 scores.  Wilson racked up 91 yards in addition to the 2 TDS.  Nemoth found receiver Marlon McLaughlin wide open way down field for a 50 yard touchdown pass.  The Demons defense was led by Eddie Wilson.  Wilson grabbed 4 tackles, a deflection and an interception returned for 10 yards.  Mike McDowell also posted big defensive numbers with 6 tackles.  The Demons beat the Shockers 34-13.

Controversy Brews in Game 4

Rated X met the Blue Chips for game 4 of week 4.  The rookie team, Rated X started the game off strongly against the 4 time champion Blue Chips.  But in the second half, the Blue Chips owned the scored board and showed the rookie team who was boss.   Blue Chip Quarterback, Bryan Tilton, hit Adam Pruitt for the opening score in the game, but the chips failed to convert.  Rated X QB Daryl Solis tied the score at 6 with a 37 yard touchdown run.  Tilton answered Solis's answer with a pass to tight end Logan Lord and the teams went into half time separated by only 6 points.  After the break, the Blue Chips shut Rated X down scoring 3 more TDS and holding Rated X to none.  Tilton hooked up with Pruitt for 2 more scores, and handed off to runningback Paul Jolly for a rushing TD.  The Blue Chip defense would not let their opponent move the ball with defenders Adam Pruitt, Abner Lopez, and Rocky Batastini all causing turnovers.  Batastini had an INT and a fumble recovery, while Lopez and Pruit each caused an INT.  Controversy erupted in the second half when after falling behind by 3 scores, Rated X took issue with the referees and screamed injustice.  But despite the teams' complaints, the scoreboard indicated a far different story as like we've said so many times before: "BAD REF CALLS DO NOT MAKE 35-6 DIFFERENCES."  It was all Blue Chips in the second half, and the 35-6 final sent the Blue Chips home with a 3 and 1 record, while Rated X had to endure another loss bringing their record to 1 and 3.

Another Heartbreaker for the Guerillaz closes the day

After 3 weeks of football, The Guerillaz found themselves sitting comfortably in the 2nd place spot with a 2-1 record, and the new team was set to take on CCFFL Veterans' Scores.  The Guerillaz came out strong and stunned Scores when Guerilla Runningback Robbie Bozen blazed down the field 58 yards and scored the games opening touchdown.  Bozen would continue to rack up yards in the game finishing with 123 total.  The Guerillaz continued to dominate Scores in the first half scoring 2 more touchdowns and causing 2 picks.  Eddy Brown and Austin Matthews both picked off Scores QB Eric Brown, and Guerilla QB Mark Lobsinger capitalized on the turnovers throwing touchdown passes to receiver Casey Lind, and tight end T.J. Plummer.   Scores finally scored just before the end of the first half when receiver Carlos Mendoza caught a 48 yard TD pass from Brown.  The Guerillaz enjoyed a 20-6 half time lead, but it was too early to celebrate as Scores came back after the half time break and snuck right back into the game.  Eric Brown rushed into the goal and brought his team closer to The Guerillaz lead, and Scores defense led by Jacob Nordman brought the team to a win.  Nordman followed up Brown's touchdown with a defensive touchdown.  He picked off Guerilla QB Lobsinger and ran it in for 6 bringing Scores to just a 2 point deficit.   Nordman had 2 INTS in the game and 3 tackles.  Scores held the Guerillaz to their 20 first half points, and took the lead late in the 4th quarter when Brown hooked up with Nordman for the team's final score.  Leading 26-20 after the score, Scores had to give the ball back to the Guerillaz with time for 1 more drive.  The Guerillaz quickly took center stage and desperately tried to reclaim their lead as time ticked away.  The Guerillaz final chance at victory ended on a sour note when on 4th down QB Lobsinger spiked the ball in an effort to stop the clock.  Lobsinger's action did stop the clock, but  possession went  back over to Scores who merely needed to kneel down to take the 26-20 lead.  The Guerillaz were sick by the mistake and team captain Jason Maffei was livid as 1 of the referees incorrectly indicated it was only 1st down leading Lobsinger to do what he did.  It was a heartbreaking defeat for the Guerillaz as they held the lead right up until the end.

Week 5 Headlines

X Factor Finishes Week 5 With Another Close One

X Factor opened up week 5 against the Shockers, and the game started off with X Factor putting a quick 6 on the board when QB Lee Robertson hooked up with receiver Matt Daggett for a 71 yard touchdown.  It looked like it was going to be all X Factor as the Shockers opening drive was stopped short by X Factor safety Brandon Heater.  Heater intercepted quarterback Cory Olsen and returned possession back to his team.  X Factor scored again in the first half on another Robertson to Daggett hook up that led the team into the break with a 12-0 lead.  After the break, the Shockers put their mark on the scoreboard when QB Olsen hit Neal Stokely for a 20 yard score.  Down only 12-6, the Shockers briefly tied the score when Olsen threw another 20 yard TD pass, this time to receiver Jamane Blackhat.  But X Factor did not let the tie last for long, Robertson quickly took back the lead throwing a 67 yard strike to Calvin Wright for a score.  X Factor's defense was led by Edell Glover who had 5 tackles and 2 sacks.  X Factor after 4 weeks of football ended every game with only a touchdown or less separating them from their opponent, week 5 was no different and ended in victory for X Factor as they beat the Shockers 18-12.

Feds Post a 3rd Shutout This Season and Remain Undefeated

The 4 and 0 Feds met the 0 and 4 Thundercats for week 5.  The weather was the worst we've seen this season with a  record cold temperature and  massive rain storm being the setting for the game.  The score had the Feds up 14-0 at half time and it looked like the winless Cats would  be able to hang with the undefeated Feds, but after 1 half of football, despite the temperature, the Feds had warmed up and they went on to finish the game posting their 3rd shutout this season with a 43-0 finish to remain undefeated.  The Feds posted huge numbers in the game with Quarterback Shawn Hudson completing 18 of 23 passes for 429 yards.  Receivers Emil Lovec and Javier Vega racked up yards and TDS.  Vega finished with 214 yards and 2 TDS, and Lovec finished with 165 yards and 2 TDS.  Feds receiver Paul Harting scored a TD in the game and runningback Jason Plaut scored the team's final touchdown.  Plaut finished the game with 81 total rushing yards.  Defensively Plaut and Harting both caused turnovers with each man catching an INT, and Plaut also recovered a fumble.  Receiver/Cornerback Stephen Novello was the shining star for the Thundercats as he picked off Hudson in the game and caught a 54 yard pass from quarterback Jeremy Davidson.

Scores Takes on Rated X

Scores and Rated X took the field for game 3 and it was another close one that ended with Scores on top.  Scores Quarterback Eric Brown started things off with a 60 yard bomb to receiver Carlos Mendoza to put the first 6 points on the board.  Rated X tied things at 6 when Daryl Solis threw a TD to receiver B.J. Williams.  With the score tied at 6-6, turnovers became a major factor in the game.  Scores won the battle of the INTS as the Scores defense caused 4.  Nick Medina, Jacob Nordman, Eric Brown, and Cornelious Johnson all picked off Solis.  The Rated X defense caused 3 turnovers with Thai Wetley picking Brown off twice, and Vaughn Terry getting 1.  Possession switched back and forth and Scores capitalized first when Cornelious Johnson rushed in a 16 yard TD to take the lead.  But Rated X tied it up again when Solis found Thei Wetley open for a 41 yard score.  Neither team converted either of their conversion attempts, and the game was tied at 12 all until Eric Brown gave his team the win when he hit Jacob Nordman in the air with a 63 yard touchdown pass.  Scores took the week 5 win with an 18-12 final.

The Violators Vs. The Demons

The Violators took on the Demons in week 5, and The Violators defense made it hard for the Demons to get anything done.  Ruining 3 promising drives for the Demons were Violator defenders' Les Reddick, Marco Martinez, and Tilor Smith who each picked off Demons' quarterback Ned Nemoth once.  Capitalizing on the turnovers was Violator quarterback Steve Handleton.  Handleton completed 12 passes for 206 yards and 4 touchdowns.  Receiver Tilor Smith caught the first 2 Violator TDS, 1 for 22 yards and the other a 55 yard bomb down field.  The Violators went into half time with a 14-0 score and quickly upped their lead to 20 after the break when Handleton hit Tony Bonomo for the team's third score.  The Demons made it on to the scoreboard when Demon cornerback Eddie Wilson picked off Handleton and gave possession back to his team.  QB Ned Nemoth was able to make the turnover worth something when he threw a 57 yard touchdown pass to receiver Marlon McLaughlin.  The Violators took the 26-6 win home after Handleton threw his fourth and final TD in the game to receiver Ralph Lee.

The Blue Chips Cause Another Heartache for The Guerillaz

Perhaps the most promising new team by record, The Guerillaz, took on the 4 time champion Blue Chips to close out mid season, and once again the Guerillaz went home with heartache after giving up a solid lead.  It would have been a huge win for the Guerillaz, but in the end it was another bitter loss which they felt the referees played a part in.  The Guerillaz put the first points on the board when quarterback Mark Lobsinger threw a 19 yard touchdown pass to tight end T.J. Plummer.  Lobsinger and Plummer hooked up again for a second touchdown and gave the team a healthy 12 point lead.  But Blue Chip quarterback Bryan Tilton found his tight end Logan Lord open for a 53 yard touchdown to put the Chips down by only 6 just before the half time break.  In the second half, the Blue Chips took a momentary lead when Tilton found Lord again for a TD and then ran in a conversion to capture a 13-12 lead.  Quarterback Mark Lobsinger and his runningback Robbie Bozen retook the lead with a tricky running play that sent Bozen into the endzone and left the Blue Chips little time to answer.  With an 18-13 lead in hand, the Guerillaz defense took the field in hopes of shutting down the chips offense, and they did, briefly.  On fourth down with 40 yards to go and only 39 seconds left in the game, Blue Chip's quarterback Bryan Tilton fumbled around with his play card and then with nobody expecting it called hike, took the snap, dropped back and gunned it to Bryan Buckner for a 40 yard winning score.  The Guerillaz cried foul, stating that the offense was not set.  But the referees disagreed and contended that the sneak play was designed and the offense was indeed set.  The defense was caught off guard and the Blue Chips once again sent a team home with a disappointing last second loss.  The Blue Chips went to 4 and 1 with the 20-18 win.
