SPRING 2005 OPENING DAY

It was a long Saturday filled with football as the 10 CCFFL Spring 2005 teams showed up one by one to play their opening day games.  All of the anticipation was finally over as the season began with The Bombers and The Blue Chips.  The Bombers showed up with a hefty new roster, adding 5 former Regulators to their team, and with the additions came an opening day victory over the Blue Chips.  Leading the Bomber offense was quarterback  Rowan Emmert, Emmert sat comfortably behind his new line and through for a touchdown and rushed in 2 TDs as well.  Joe Eckman, Aaron McBride, and Steve Serafini made up the revamped line for the Bombers, and Carlos Mendoza caught the TD pass.  Despite a loss, the Blue Chips had some impressive moments of their own.  Bryan Buckner caught his team's only score on a 59 yard strike from QB Bryan Tilton, and Logan Lord and Bryan Marsh led the Blue Chip defense, Lord had 7 tackles and a deflection and Marsh had 6 tackles, a sack, and a deflection.  The Bomber won 20-6.

The Championship game rematch between Scores and The Feds was played second, and the end result was the same.  Fall "04" Championship winners, Scores, were the victors in an exciting match yet again.  Scores led at halftime by 2 points from an Ed Zinda caused safety.  The third quarter was scoreless, but Scores opened the fourth and upped their lead when Jeff Day ran  for a short yardage score following a pass to Jacob Nordman .  The Feds tied the game when QB Shawn Hudson found receiver Gary Noah for a touchdown and brought the score to 14 all.  With two minutes to go, Scores took the win when Day rushed in a 39 yard score.  The Feds almost answered successfully when Jason Plaut ran back the kick return into the zone, but his 83 yard attempt was called back by the referee stating he stepped out of bounds.  The final score was Scores 21, Feds 14.

Gorilla Unit and the Rebels played game three, and the Gorilla Unit caused the only shut out of the day beating the Rebels 20-0.  G-Unit quarterback Troy Fontana threw for 3 TD's in the game, two to receiver Nick Desideri, and 1 to Elihu Vann.  The Gorilla Unit defense was led by Chris Butler, Butler caused two interceptions, and had a tackle and a sack.  Nick Desideri also caused a turn over.  The Rebels offense couldn't get anything started, quarterback Ryan Bauman was held to only 39 yards in the air, and 49 on the ground.  Defensively the Rebels were led by Chris Barredo who had 4 tackles in the game.  It was an ugly opener for the Rebels, and a sweet win for Gorilla Unit.

Out with the old, in with the new -- The Predators met The Cobras for game four, and the CCFFL met both as the two new teams took the field for the first time.  New names and colors combined with some familiar faces and total strangers with both teams consisting of a mix of new players and some who have played before.  As expected it was a close one ending 26-20 in The Predators favor.  Highlights in the game included impressive numbers by both team's quarterbacks.  Predator QB Matt Gotta threw for 253 yards and 2 TDs, and Cobra QB Andy Heiser threw for 194 yards and 2 TDs as well.  Gotta and Heiser both rushed for touchdowns too, Heiser rushed for one, and Gotta got the win by rushing for 2.  Offensive player of the week went to Predator receiver Eddie Wilson, Wilson caught both Predator touchdowns and racked up 177 yards on 5 catches.  Cobra Wide Receiver and Cornerback Ron Snooks made an impressive debut leading his team's defense with 6 tackles and catching 5 passes for 60 yards.  Ron's brother, Rick Snooks also had impressive numbers catching two passes for 68 yards and a TD.  The Predator defense was led by Matt Gotta, Eddie Wilson and Josh Triner.  Triner and Gotta both caught interceptions, and Wilson had 4 tackles, 1 deflection, and a fumble recovery.  The Predators beat The Cobras 26-20.

Ending the day were two brand new teams, The Violators and The Scorpions.  Although the Scorpions had a handful of veteran CCFFL players, primarily they were new, the Violators were however, the only team to take the field with all brand new players to the league.  The game was exciting to the end with a surprise finish.  The Violators put the first points on the board, quarterback Joey McNinch rushed into the zone for 6 and then converted two points on a pass to Casey Skog.  The Scorpions then answered the TD, but were unable to tie the score as they failed their conversion attempt.  The Violators held an 8-6 lead at half time and following the half they upped their lead to 14-6 when McNinch hit receiver Alfonso Baez for a TD.  Scorpion Edell Glover rushed in his team's next score, but again the conversion failed and the team was still down by 2.  Holding a two point lead, The Violators thought they cinched a win when they upped their lead to 10 shortly after the two minute warning.  Casey Skog rushed 72 yards for a TD and again McNinch successfully converted a 2 point conversion on a pass to Rigo Lopez.  Veteran quarterback for the Scorpions Lee Robertson knew it wasn't over yet despite the clock dwindling down.  Robertson quickly led his team down field and scored on a pass to Sergio Godoy, again the conversion failed and the team was still down by 4 points with only 34 seconds left to go.  The Scorpions opted to try the good old onside kick and to everyone's surprise it was a success.  Robertson wasted no time getting the job done, as he hit receiver Edell Glover for the 34 yard winning touchdown.  Time expired and the Violators watched as what seemed like was going to be a win quickly become a loss.  The final score was Scorpions 24, Violators 22.

SPRING 2005 WEEK 4 HIGHLIGHTS

Happy Easter!!!

Opening up week four were the Gorilla Unit and the 3 and 0 Predators.  The Predators hoped to keep their winning streak going, but the G-Unit had something else in mind.  As expected it was a close game throughout, but in the end it was G-Unit who went home successful.  G-Unit took away The Predators "undefeated status" with a 26-20 victory.  Highlights in the game included  3 touchdown passes from Gorilla Unit quarterback Troy Fontana to receiver Rich Machado and a 75 yard touchdown pass from Predator quarterback Matt Gotta to receiver Eddie Wilson.  Nick Desideri led G-Unit's defense with 6 tackles, and cornerback Chris Butler had a tackle and 2 deflections.  The Predators defense was led by Sean Pecorino who posted a tackle, 2 deflections, and an INT.  Both G-Unit's and The Predators' quarterbacks  had great days.  Fontana threw for 208 yards and 4 touchdowns, and Gotta threw for 203 yards and 2 touchdowns.

The Feds met the Scorpions in game 2 and The Feds bumped their record up to 3 and 1 while the Scorpions fell further down to 1 and 3.  The Feds gave the Scorpions a beating with a 41-7 win.  Highlights in the game included a league offensive player of the week award to Fed Paul Harting for his 5 receptions for 128 yards and 2 touchdowns.  Feds receivers Emil Lovec and Gary Noah each almost hit the 100 yard mark, with Lovec catching for 96 yards & 2 TDS and Noah reaching 85 yards on 4 catches.  Feds quarterback, Shawn Hudson threw for 308 yards and 4 touchdowns.  The Scorpions made their mark on the scoreboard with a touchdown pass thrown from QB Lee Robertson to receiver Andy Samples.   Cornerback Rodney Mayers led the Fed's defense with 3 tackles and 3 sacks, linebacker Nick Johnson posted 4 tackles and a deflection.  Scorpion's cornerback, Calvin Wright led the Scorpion defense with 4 tackles and 3 deflections.  Former Fed turned Scorpion Robert Ryan also had a good game against his former teammates posting 1 tackle, 2 sacks, and a deflection.

The Bombers and Violators played game 3.  The Bombers arrived undefeated with a 3 and 0 record and went home with 1 more as they tormented the Violators and sent them home with a 60-6 loss.  Highlights in the game included Bombers' runningback Mikel Williams rushing 5 times for 131 yards and 3 TDs, and cornerback B.J. Williams earning defensive player of the week for grabbing 4 tackles and nabbing 3 INTS, one for a TD.  Bombers QB Rowan Emmert didn't have to throw the ball very much, but he completed all 4 passes that he threw for 149 yards and 3 TDS.  Despite the absence of the Violators QB, wide receiver, and #1 cornerback, they were able to put points on the board against the undefeated team.  Fill in quarterback Ricardo Gutierrez completed a TD pass to Raul Barojas after a successful drive down field by tight end Doug Langworthy.

Game 4 brought the Blue Chips and the Rebels together for a game a little closer than the previous two.  It was a low scorer with both teams only scoring one touchdown, but a safety gave the Rebels the edge and they upped there record to .500 with an 8-6 win.  Highlights in the game included an early 24 yard run for a touchdown by Rebels quarterback Ryan Bauman.  The Rebels didn't convert but Rebels defensive end Jessie Horton gave them the two points they needed to win the game with a sack in the endzone for a safety.  Horton and Bauman led the Rebel defense as well with 4 sacks for Horton and 6 tackles and a deflection for Bauman.  Wide receiver Logan Lord scored the only Blue Chip's touchdown on a 15 yard pass from quarterback Bryan Tilton.  Tilton threw for 100 yards in the game.  The Blue Chips defense was led by Adam Pruitt who posted an amazing 8 tackles and a sack.

Scores met the Cobras to end the day, but it wasn't quite the Cobra team they planned to play, rather a core of Cobras combined with pick up players from the league as half of the Cobras were no shows.  Hopefully the short roster was due to the Easter holiday weekend, or perhaps it was because it was the late game, but either way it didn't end pretty for the Cobras.  Scores beat the make up team 49-12.  Highlights in the game included 246 passing yards & 5 TD's from Scores quarterback Jeff Day.  Scores receiver Jacob Nordman caught 2 touchdowns and had 4 receptions for 93 yards.  Runningback Jerome Moore had a big day rushing 3 times for 80 yards and catching 3 passes for 56 yards.  Defensively Scores Tight end Eric Brown had 4 tackles and an interception for 71 yards.  Damien Williams posted 3 tackles and 2 sacks, and Jack Montgomery had 6 tackles.  Cobra Craig Starr caught one of the Cobra TDS on a 38 yard pass, and he led the defense with 5 tackles and a sack.

Week 5 Highlights

The Rebels showed up for game one to face the Cobras, but the Cobras were a no show giving the Rebels an automatic victory.  Unfortunately the Rebels had to go home without a game to play, and the league directors had to go home and redo the schedule, as the Cobras are now dropped by default from the Spring 2005 schedule.  Although the Rebels got a freebie win, they will get to make up for the missing game later in the season (see schedule page for new schedule as it affects all teams.)

The Feds met Gorilla Unit for game 2, and although their was a game, missing in action was G-Unit's QB Troy Fontana.  While Fontana basked in the sun and fun in Cancun, his teammates struggled at home with the Feds.  Feds quarterback Shawn Hudson completed 14 passes for 291 yards and 3 touchdowns, 1 each to receivers Paul Harting, Emil Lovec, and Steve Johnson.  Harting had his second over 100 yard day receiving in a row, catching 5 passes for 134 yards.  Rich Machado took over the QB reins for Fontana, but was unable to find the endzone.  Machado completed 7 passes for 69 yards in the game.  Defensively G-Unit had several strong performances.  Greg Bonnett posted 5 tackles and 3 sacks, Karl Febel had 7 tackles, and Nick Desideri grabbed 4 tackles and 2 deflections.  The Feds defense was led by Paul Harting who had 3 tackles, a deflection, and an interception.  The Feds shut out The Gorilla Unit 28-0.

Another shut out came from the Bombers as they met the Scorpions for game 3, and sent them home with 0 as well.  Bomber quarterback Rowan Emmert found receiver Carlos Mendoza wide open in the endzone for the team's first score.  Runningback Mikel Williams put the next 6 on the board with a 12 yard rushing TD.  Once again B.J. Williams led the Bomber defense posting 9 tackles and an interception.   Williams defensive performance was complemented by teammates Fernando Castro and Justin Bodine.  Castro grabbed 4 tackles, and Bodine had 2 tackles, a sack, and a deflection.  DE Steve Serafini kept the pressure on Scorpions' quarterback Lee Robertson with 2 tackles and 2 sacks.  Robertson threw for 130 yards, including a 50 yard pass to Cornelious Johnson.  The Scorpions defense played the 5 and 0 team tough with Robert Ryan accounting for 1 tackle, 2 sacks, and a deflection, and Andy Samples grabbing 5 tackles and causing Emmert to throw his first INT of the season.  But the Scorpion defense was not enough to stop the Bombers where it counts, as the Bombers found the zone three times.  Claude Walker caught the teams final score in the game, and the Bombers stayed undefeated with an 18-0 victory.

The Violators played the Blue Chips  in game 4, and the Violators were still searching for a first win, but the Blue Chips had something else in mind.  The Violators took first possession of the game and things looked promising as they marched down the field and scored on a 23 yard pass from quarterback Joey McNinch to receiver Tod Janfada.  But the Blue Chips quickly answered with a 20 yard touchdown run by Jason Leal.  The Blue Chip defense stepped it up a notch after the Violators first possession, corners Bryan Buckner and Leondre Lewis caused 3 turnovers between them.  Lewis caught a pick and returned it 24 yards, and Buckner caught two interceptions, returning one for a touchdown.  Blue Chip Adam Pruitt upped his lead on the league leader tackle board with 7 more tackles.  In addition to the INT he caught defensively, Leondre Lewis tormented the Violators offensively at receiver as well.  Lewis caught 3 touchdown passes and racked up 157 receiving yards.  Blue Chip quarterback Bryan Tilton completed 60% of his passes for 218 yards and 4 touchdowns.  Just as they had opened the game, the Violators closed the game with another score against the powerful Blue Chip defense.  Quarterback Joey McNinch rushed in the score.  The Blue Chips beat the Violators 43-12.

Scores and The Predators closed the day in a much anticipated match up.   Scores defense caused 5 turnovers in the game which proved to be detrimental for the Predators.  Scores Cornerback Jacob Nordman picked off Predator quarterback Matt Gotta twice, while Nick Medina, Jack Montgomery, and Jeff Day each got credit for 1 INT.  It wasn't Gotta's day as he only completed 6 passes for 79 yards, and the QB who had yet to throw an INT, in the face of high winds went home now having thrown 4.  Scores QB Jeff Day on the other hand had an exceptional day completing 13 passes for 200 yards and 2 touchdowns, and rushing for 43 yards and a touchdown.  Predator Josh James caused a turnover for the Predators by picking off Day, but the one pick was not enough to compare to Scores' 5, and Scores beat the Predators 22-6.  The Predator TD came late in the game when Gotta found receiver Sean Pecorino on a 42 yard touchdown pass.  Receiver Jacob Nordman, and tight end Eric Brown caught the two touchdown receptions for Scores.
